Rct. Daniel Bicksler, Platoon 2061, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, reviews his notes June 26, 2014, from earlier marksmanship classes on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits such as Bicksler, a 19-year-old native of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., spend five days learning the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, firing positions and rifle range commands in preparation for firing live rounds the following week. The Marine Corps holds the longest basic marksmanship training for recruits of any United States military service. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 8, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
