Sgt. Marcus McMurray, a primary marksmanship instructor, teaches recruits of Platoon 2061, Golf Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, shooting techniques during marksmanship training June 26, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. McMurray, a 27-year-old native of Jacksonville, Fla., trained recruits for five days on the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship, firing positions and rifle range commands in preparation for firing live rounds the following week. The Marine Corps holds the longest basic marksmanship training for recruits of any United States military service. Golf Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 8, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
