U.S. President-elect Barack Obama greets Armed Forces Inaugural Committee members standing outside as he departs the building in Washington on Jan. 8. AFIC carries on a tradition, which dates back more than 200 years, of honoring the new commander-in-chief and recognizing civilian control of the military. AFIC is a joint-service organization responsible for providing military ceremonial support to the 56th Presidential Inauguration, which will take place on Jan. 20.
