A tent sits erected on Dewey Field in front of the former Newport Asylum for the Poor and original location of U.S. Naval War College (NWC), dubbed the “little poorhouse” by Commodore Stephen B. Luce during establishment of NWC in 1884. The “little poorhouse” is named Founders Hall in honor of the founding fathers of the college, home to the NWC Museum, and a National Historic Landmark. One-thousand five-hundred eighteen joint military, civilian, and international students graduated from the NWC, June 20, and were recognized for their achievements by Adm. John M. Richardson, director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, and Rear Adm. Walter E. “Ted” Carter Jr., president, NWC, during the ceremony. Graduating students received either a NWC diploma or a Master’s of Arts degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.
