Mayor Rahm Emanuel speaks with a construction representative about project features prior to a press conference at the Corps' Northerly Island Ecosystem Restoration Project site, Chicago, June 17, 2014. Jo-Ellen Darcy, assistant secretary of the Army (Civil Works), joined Emanuel, Gina McCarthy, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency administrator, Rep. Danny Davis and Michael Kelly, Chicago Park District superintendent, for a tour and press conference at the 40-acre Corps' Ecosystem Restoration Project in the heart of the city, known as Northerly Island, June 17, 2014. This 40-acre project will create six habitat types that existed before the Chicago metropolitan area was developed. For more info: 1.usa.gov/Uf29ts. The Great Lakes Fishery and Ecosystem Restoration (GLFER) program gives the Corps authority to plan, design, and construct ecosystem restoration projects that support the restoration of fisheries, ecosystems, and beneficial uses of the Great Lakes. Federal funding for this project is from the Corps of Engineers and EPA through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), and non-federal funding from the Chicago Park District.
