Capt. Michael Phillips, formerly with the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Benning, Ga., focuses on the archery target as Coach John Fuller looks on. Phillips will compete in the 2014 U.S. Army Warrior Trials at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., June 15 to 19. Phillips says, "Adaptive sports gave me a second chance at life as an athlete. It allows me not to be defined by my injuries but by my achievements." He wants to help establish an adaptive sports program in Columbus, Ga. Phillips is a native of Cullowhee, N.C. and currently resides in Hamilton, Ga. The event is hosted by Warrior Transition Command. The Army Warrior Trials include athletes from the Army, Marines and Air Force who will face off in archery, basketball, cycling, track and field, swimming, shooting, sitting volleyball and wheelchair basketball. Participants in the trials include athletes with spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, serious illnesses and amputations.
