James E. "Jay" Hickey, U.S. Naval War College’s (NWC) director, College of Distance Education, delivers remarks to staff and faculty during a celebration marking the 100th anniversary of distance-learning education and non-resident programs at NWC in Newport, R.I. In the early stages of distance education, coursework was completed through the use of postal correspondence. As our distance learning programs developed through the years, faculty-led seminars were added through ongoing relationships with the Naval Postgraduate School and later, through the introduction of the World Wide Web, CD-ROM, and Navy Knowledge Online enabled programs.
