Retired U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jose Navarro exits a CH-47 Chinook helicopter upon arrival to International Security Assistance Forces headquarters, Kabul, Afghanistan, May 31, 2014. Navarro was there as a participant of Operation Proper Exit, a Troop’s First Foundation initiative that allows wounded service members to return to the battlefield and leave on their own terms. He was injured in Jalrez Valley, Afghanistan, in 2007 when his platoon was ambushed. As a result, he was burned on more than 35 percent of his body, had shrapnel in his left leg and a gunshot wound to his torso. He spent more than five years at the hospital and has undergone more than 160 surgeries. (U.S. Army photo by Staff Sgt. Lyndsey Prax)
