Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Johnta Dennis, left, and Rct. Katherine Palacio, both with Platoon 4018, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, read scripture during their evening devotion time May 1, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. The evening routine – consisting of mail call, free time, and optional spiritual devotion – allows recruits to get a break from the close, constant association with their drill instructors at the end of the training day. Dennis, a 21-year-old native of Fayetteville, N.C., and Palacio, a 22-year-old native of Tucson, Ariz., are scheduled to graduate June 6, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
