On March 15, 2014, 2nd Lt. James Lamoreaux a Soldier assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment and wife Shannon of five months were walking near the Chattahoochee River and saw a small child being swept away by the current. Lamoreaux said, “a teenager jumped in the water to save the child but also started to drown. I managed to swim to position, grab him and bring him to the nearest rock to be rescued by the Fire and Rescue later. I ventured back into the water, grabbed a hold of his friend and brought him back to the rock where the other little child was waiting.”
“I like to thank Fire Chief Ricky Shores for answering the call so quickly and his staff for being so well trained in handling the situation,” he added.
Lamoreaux is a trained lifeguard and native of Meridian, Miss.
Columbus Fire Chief Shores presented Lamoreaux with a Citizen Valor Award for saving the child during a monthly proclamation that was held at the Citizens Service Center in Columbus, Ga., May 6. Lamoreaux is currently assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, to 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division.
