Retired Capt. Jack Crawford said for decades after World War II, Midway was largely obscured from the national consciousness. Crawford said he wanted a good book written about the battle, and there wasn't one. So, Crawford encouraged a friend and former professor from the U.S. Naval Academy, Craig Symonds, to write one.
