Chief Warrant Officer Wilfrid Bossous, USS Bataan's (LHD 5) air boatswain, looks across the flight deck as two CH-53E Super Stallions from the Ironhorse of Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 461 turn at low power after touching down aboard the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship during flight operations off the coast of Morehead City, N.C., as the ship steams toward Haiti. Bossous, who is Haitian-born, lost multiple family members and is unsure of the well-being of several others following the disaster. Bataan departed Naval Station Norfolk Jan. 14 to provide humanitarian assistance/disaster response in Haiti. Bataan, along with amphibious dock landing ships USS Fort McHenry (LSD 43), USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) and USS Carter Hall (LSD 50), will provide military support capabilities to civil authorities to help stabilize and improve the situation in the wake of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the area Jan. 12.
