Rct. Devon Burton, Platoon 3040, India Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, holds the basic warrior stance during his martial arts qualification April 18, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Burton, a 21-year-old native of Jacksonville, Fla., spent more than 30 hours learning and sustaining these techniques in order to earn a tan belt, the first belt level in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. India Company is scheduled to graduate June 13, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
