Lt. Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, vice chief, National Guard Bureau, addresses the Fort Wayne Base Community Council on a visit to Fort Wayne, Ind., home of the 122nd Fighter Wing, Indiana Air National Guard. He spoke of the three main elements of the National Guard mission: The operations they carryout abroad as a reserve of the United States Air Force, the operations for the defense and care of the homeland across the state, and the partnerships across the globe and in their own community. Such partnerships are what drive the Base Community Council as a conduit for the Army and Air National Guard units to be in regular contact with area business and civic leaders. Initiatives started by the council are key to supporting the traditional soldiers and airmen in their needs while performing their role as a civilian among the community.
