Rct. Georgia Joyner, an 18-year-old native of New Bern, N.C., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Lucas is training with Platoon 4012, Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate April 25, 2014. “I joined the Marine Corps because I have been a Marine dependent for the last nine years, and I can’t think of any other branch but the Marine Corps. It’s a family, a support system, and is like no other place and no other branch on Earth. It’s a prideful branch. And to be remembered and to know that I did something that is important would mean the world to me,” said Joyner, who graduated from Havelock High School, in Havelock, N.C., in 2013. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
