Former Spc. 4 Santiago Erevia and his son, Spc. Roland Erevia of the Texas National Guard, discuss the elder Erevia’s service medals and awards, which include a South Vietnamese medal, an Army Commendation Medal, a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and the nation’s second highest award for valor, the Distinguished Service Cross. While Santiago was deployed to Vietnam in May 1969 as a radio-telephone operator with the 101st Airborne Division, he had been assigned to care for the wounded during a search-and-clear mission while the rest of his platoon penetrated an enemy defensive perimeter. After North Vietnamese soldiers attacked his position, Santiago rushed forward into heavy fire, single-handedly destroying four enemy bunkers with grenades and M16 fire. His heroism has been a big influence on his son, who himself deployed to Iraq three times, and now Santiago will receive the Medal of Honor in a July White House ceremony.
