Staff Sgt. Marshawn Snelling, a martial arts instructor, demonstrates a technique for recruits of Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, during one of their many Marine Corps Martial Arts Program lessons on Parris Island, S.C. Drill instructors like Snelling, 26, from Greenville, Ga., teach the program as part of instilling the warrior ethos in recruits. The program fuses hand-to-hand combat skills with character development, helping transform recruits into physically strong, morally sound Marines. Mike Company is scheduled to graduate May 23, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
