    1-501st Infantry Regiment conducts biathlon

    U.S. Army Spc. Jared Baughn, a paratrooper assigned to Comanche Company, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry Regiment, waits to negotiate a hill on the ski course during the battalion’s biathlon competition March 7 at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. The purpose of the training is to develop each paratrooper’s ability to ski over variable terrain and rapidly engage targets at 50 meters with accurate fire in arctic conditions. The ski course will cover 5 kilometers of variable terrain while the marksmanship portion will test the fundamentals of marksmanship, rapid and effective manipulation of individual weapon systems, and how to compensate for environmental conditions. The fastest officer was 1st Lt. Andrew Rampp, 3rd squad, Delaware Company: 0:41:13, the fastest noncommisioned officer was Staff Sgt. Jon Phillips, Headquarters Platoon Staff: 0:58:12, and the fastest Soldier was Spc. Alek S. Hanley, 3rd squad, Delaware Company: 1:08:21.
