The 19 civilian dependents were rescued by crew members of the U.S. Navy USS Chosin, a guided missile cruiser, and USS Michael Murphy after Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Protecteur, a Royal Canadian Navy auxiliary oil replenishing ship, experienced a fire 340 nautical miles from Hawaii.
