Rct. Martha Mairena, a 19-year-old Elizabeth, N.J., native, is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Mairena is training with Platoon 4009, November Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate March 14, 2014. “I decided to join the Marine Corps because I didn’t want my mom to work anymore; she’s very sick, and I wanted to support her. She has made me the woman that I am today and … I don’t want her to suffer anymore,” said Mairena, who graduated from Elizabeth High School in 2012 and also earned an associate degree in criminal justice from Union County College in Cranford, N.J. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
