Sailors assigned to the forward-deployed USS Essex prepare the close-in weapons system before an ammo upload on the fantail of Essex after the ship departed Sasebo, Japan for the start of fall patrol. Essex is the lead ship of the only forward-deployed U.S. Expeditionary Strike Group and serves as the flagship for Combined Task Force 76, the Navy's only forward-deployed amphibious force commander.
