Rct. Joon Hee Lee, Platoon 1021, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, responds to a command given by his drill instructor during “pickup” Jan. 11, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits are expected to respond loudly and confidently to all commands. Pickup is the recruits’ first opportunity to meet the men who will train them to become U.S. Marines over the next 12 weeks.
