Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Sgt. Katrina Brady, a drill instructor of Platoon 4004, Oscar Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, leads her recruits during their initial drill evaluation Dec. 23, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Drillmasters, experts on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual, graded Brady, 24, from White Hall, Ill., based on her appearance and ability to perform and command drill movements. Drill is a key element of Marine Corps recruit training because it helps instill self-discipline, obedience to orders and unit pride. Oscar Company is scheduled to graduate Feb. 14, 2014. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Lance Cpl. Vaniah Temple)
