Middleton is a North Carolina National Guard veteran of World War II and served with the 30th Infantry Division (now the 30th Armored Brigade Combat Team) and continues to support the military community through volunteer work at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum, and as a member of the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry, as well as the 30th Infantry Division Association.
