Lt. Tom Przybyla, commanding officer of Coast Guard Cutter Biscayne Bay and Chief Petty Officer Mike Singleton, a boatswain's mate, survey the ice field in the St. Marys River from the cutter's bridge as they discuss the ice-breaking operation, Dec. 13, 2013, that will create a good track for upbound lakers to follow. The crew of Biscayne Bay left its homeport of St. Ignace, Mich., Dec. 11. The crew has spent the days conducting ice reconnaissance, grooming tracks and conducted its first direct assist of a vessel beset by ice. The motor vessel Presque Isle, the only 1,000-foot tug/barge combination unit on the Great Lakes, got stuck just below Winter's Point Turn just south of Neebish Island, Mich.
