The soldiers assumed control of an area in western al-Anbar province at the beginning of August from 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 5. The Iraqi battalion has conducted patrols near Rutbah, allowing the Iraqi police to focus within the city.
