ARABIAN GULF (Jan. 5, 2004)-- Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Emil Smith, 20, cleans a .50 caliber machine gun as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Adak patrols the waters of the Northern Arabian Gulf. The Coast Guard has deployed four 110-foot patrol boats to the region to support U.S. Navy 5th Fleet and coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Maritime Interception Operations to stop illegal oil smuggling and to search for terrorists.
