Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Shawn Soultz observes the work of contractors maintaining oil containment boom in Bay Bourbeux, La., on June 12, 2010. Assigned to Forward Operating Base Cocodrie, La., Soultz and other members of the Coast Guard oversee oil recovery operations to ensure that work is performed safely and to standards. Crews of contractors work 12-hour days maintaining, re-positioning and deploying boom to prevent the spread of oil into marsh grass in Terrebonne Parish. Boom operations play an important role in the strategic response to the oil spill following the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig. Coast Guard photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class John D. Miller.
