MIDDLETOWN, Calif. - Chief Petty Officer Scott Greenlaw, the officer in charge at Coast Guard Loran Station Middletown, watches as Petty Officer 3rd Class William Yi, an electronics technician from the station, safely climbs the 600-foot loran tower Sept. 18, 2008, to perform routine maintenance. The loran station crew ceased broadcasting of their domestic signal at noon, Feb. 8, 2010, as part of a nationwide termination of the North American Long Range Navigation-C signal. The loran system began as a radio-based navigation system during World War II under a secret program to provide the Allied forces with a reliable and accurate means of navigation at sea in any weather.
