NORTHERN PACIFIC OCEAN - Seaman Apprentice Brendon Fry, a native of Long Beach, Calif., now a member of deck division stationed aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf, learns how to splice synthetic nylon onto chaffing gear, Tuesday, August 4, 2009. Fry is the Bertholf's most junior crewmember, having recently graduated from basic training. As a member of deck division, Fry will continue to learn basic seamanship skills, and become accustomed to life at sea, while he awaits re-assignment to one of the Coast Guard's twenty-one more formal 'A' schools.
