First of a new era of state-of-the-art buoy tenders, the Coast Guard cutter Juniper cuts through the ice at Marinette, Wisconsin enroute to its homeport of Newport, Rhode Island. The 225-foot JUNIPER was commissioned in 1996 as the lead ship in the Coast Guard's Buoy Tender Replacement Project, a major acquisition to replace the WWII-era 180-foot buoy tenders.
