The revenue cutter VIGILANT captures the British privateer DART in a night engagement off Block Island on October, 4, 1813. The capture of the DART was one of the most impressive captures by a revenue cutter because of their size and small armament. The VIGILANT fired one broadside and then boarded the DART. Actions such as the the VIGILANT's capture carried on the cutter service's military activies throughout the War of 1812 and helped establish the traditions of today's Coast Guard.
