CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. - Chief Petty Officer Rick Ball, officer-in-charge of Coast Guard Station Chincoteague, lights off a flare to signal the start of the 82nd Annual Chincoteague Pony Swim here July 25, 2007. The event which is held on the Eastern Shore of Virginia every July, showcases wild ponies from Assateague Island, Va., swimming across the Assateague Channel into Chincoteague. Volunteer firemen drive ponies across the channel from the wildlife refuge to the town so the refuge doesn't get overpopulated. Station Chincoteague provided a security zone for the event which attracted many boaters and spectators from all over the country. U.S. Coast Guard photo by PA2 Christopher Evanson.
