CHEBOYGAN, Mich. (Dec. 17, 2005) The Coast Guard's brand new cutter is welcomed home Dec. 17. The new Mackinaw is scheduled to be commissioned June 2006 when the old Mackinaw is scheduled to be decommissioned. The new Mackinaw will carry on the tradition of its predecessor, which has served the Great Lakes for more than 60 years by keeping the shipping lanes open during the frigged months of winter when the lakes freeze over.
