CUMBERLAND, Maryland (June 7)--Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Nina Leonard of Team Semper Paratus (TSP), the Coast Guard's first and only adventure racing team, pushes down the trail at Tom's Run. TSP, in an effort to train for the Armed Forces Eco-Challenge in Alaska this August, preceeded the event with a sub-24-hour ride of the course in the opposite direction, then turned around and headed back with the nearly 400 other athletes from 17 teams who came to test their mettle. Tom's Run, June 7-8, 2002 is the Coast Guard's signature distance event; a 192-mile relay from Cumberland, Md., to Washington, D.C. along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal path, during which teams must have a cyclist and a runner on the course at all times.
