The visit, board, search, and seizure team from the guided-missile cruiser USS Vella Gulf boards a rigid hull inflatable boat in order to conduct a boarding exercise. Vella Gulf is participating in Joint Task Force Exercise 08-4 as a part of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group. The Iwo Jima ESG is made up of Vella Gulf; the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima; the amphibious transport dock ship USS San Antonio; the amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall; the guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage, all homeported at Norfolk, Va.; the guided-missile destroyer USS Roosevelt, homeported at Mayport, Fla.; and the fast attack submarine USS Hartford, homeported at Groton, Conn.
