Sgt. Murray Slack, a flight engineer with 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, conducts pre-start procedure on a Cormorant helicopter at United States Coast Guard (USCG) Air Station Sitka, Alaska, as a USCG H-60 helicopter crew conducts hoist exercises. The 442 Squadron crew was stopping over in Sitka on their way to a joint Canada/U.S. Arctic Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. Cross-border SAREXs are conducted regularly to ensure both Canadian and American SAR personnel are familiar with each others' operations in the event of an emergency response involving crews from both the Canadian Armed Forces and U.S. military.
