Sgt. Joel Dunville of the Canadian Army Advanced Warfare Centre (CAAWC) prepares his parachute and drop bag for a jump into the scene of a major air disaster search and rescue exercise. Dunville and six other members of the CAAWC flew on board an Alaska Air National Guard C-130 aircraft as part of the joint Canada/U.S. Arctic Search and Rescue Exercise (Arctic SAREX) on Oct. 30, 2013. The Army parachutists were participating alongside Canadian Armed Forces Search and Rescue technicians and United States Air Force para-rescuers during the SAREX, involving a response to simulated airliner crash along the Alaska/Yukon border. Cross-border SAREXs are conducted regularly to ensure both Canadian and American SAR personnel are familiar with each others' operations in the event of an emergency response involving crews from both the Canadian Armed Forces and U.S. military.
