Sgt. Kevon Williams, an academics instructor at the Recruit Training Facility on Parris Island, S.C., gives instructions to Rct. David Frederick, Platoon 1085, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, on the land navigation portion of his practical application test Oct. 18, 2013. Recruits such as Frederick, an 18-year-old native of Orono, Maine, were tested on basic land navigation skills, casualty care, general military subjects and hand and arm signals. Williams is a 28-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y. Bravo Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
