Sgt. Logan Sowell, a drill instructor for Platoon 1086, Bravo Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, prepares his recruits with some last-minute cramming before their practical application testing Oct. 18, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. The test covers basic land navigation skills, casualty care, general military subjects and hand and arm signals. Sowell is a 25-year-old native of Ithaca, N.Y. Bravo Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 1, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
