Melissa Salts, a recruit from the San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Academy, graduates as a deputy sheriff at the Bob Hope Theater aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Oct. 16. Salts invited her grandfather, Robert Laesch, to the graduation ceremony. Laesch is a Marine veteran who fought during World War II and the Battle of Iwo Jima. Recruits at the ceremony graduated as either deputy sheriffs or police officers for the San Diego area.
Laesch came out from Arizona to attend Salts’ graduation, where she became a deputy sheriff for the San Diego region. The San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Academy recognized him as an honored guest at the ceremony.
