Cmdr. Philip Pelikan gets ready to cut the birthday cake with Seaman Recruit Abigail Bartolomei during a cake cutting ceremony for the Navy’s 238th Birthday Oct. 10 at the mess hall aboard Cherry Point. It is traditional for the oldest Sailor present to cut the birthday cake with the youngest Sailor, symbolizing the passing of tradition from one generation to the next. Pelikan is the command chaplain for the air station and Bartolomei is a boatswain’s mate with Cherry Point Naval Boat Docks.
