Recruits of Fox Company, 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, participate in chemical and biological warfare defense training Sept. 24, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Instructors teach recruits the basics of operating in a chemically or biologically contaminated environment by exposing them to tear gas, a nonlethal agent that causes watery eyes, respiratory irritation and a burning sensation on the skin. Fox Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 15, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
