Two military personnel in full protective gear, including helmets and padded vests, are engaged in a pugil stick combat drill on an elevated platform. A large audience of recruits in olive green t-shirts sits on the ground watching the demonstration. The setting appears to be a military training facility, likely a Marine Corps base, with additional combatants visible in the background.

Recruits of Platoons 3088, 3089 and 3090, Kilo Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, battle one another at close-quarters during pugil stick training Sept. 17, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits fight with pugil sticks in two 15-second matches to simulate fighting with rifles affixed with bayonets. This training, along with other close-quarters combat skills, is part of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which contributes to the mental, character and physical development of recruits and Marines alike. Kilo Company is scheduled to graduate Nov. 22, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
