Lt. Col. Butch Bowers, judge advocate officer for the South Carolina Air National Guard, and Maj. David King, State Partnership liaison for South Carolina Army National Guard, met with Air Force Maj. Jim Eves, the servicing JAG for the U.S. Military Group, Bogota, Columbia, to discuss and develop a plan of action for JAGs from the South Carolina National Guard (SCNG) to assist the MilGroup's efforts to implement military justice and rule of law initiatives in the Colombian army. With the SCNG’s significant military and civilian experience in all three branches of federal, state and local government, Eves was impressed with the depth of knowledge and strength that the SCNG JAG Corps could offer. A tentative rule of law engagement is scheduled with the Colombians and SCNG JAGs in December 2013. In addition, possibilities to work with the Department of Justice and the Department of State were discussed, and plans are in place to meet with officials with both agencies to develop plans to further enhance the role that the SCNG JAG Corps will play in implementing significant rule of law initiatives with the Colombian military.
