On Sept. 11, 2013, a mixture of desert-colored flight suits, Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern multicam uniforms, Airman Battle Uniforms and Army Combat Uniforms dot the ranks of hundreds of service members from the Transit Center at Manas, Kyrgyzstan, walking in memory of people who have died in service since the attacks against America on Sept. 11, 2001. The hushed tribute began after a moment of silence beginning at 6:46 p.m. locally, the exact moment when the first airplane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center a dozen years ago. As of May 2012, 68 percent of airmen joined the Air Force after 9/11, and have never known a peacetime military. (U.S. Air Force Photo/Lt. Col. Max Despain)
