Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Rct. Dylan Davis, Platoon 3078, Mike Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, aims through the scope on his rifle Aug. 22, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Recruits aimed at a barrel painted with targets to represent the actual size of targets recruits will shoot at the following week. They train with scopes because the Marine Corps now equips its rifles with scopes, although rifle marksmanship fundamentals do not change with the device. Davis, 18, from Front Royal, Va., is scheduled to graduate Oct. 4, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training. Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for 50 percent of males and 100 percent of females in the Marine Corps. (Photo by Cpl. Caitlin Brink)
