Landing signal officers (LSO) watch as an aircraft lands aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) during flight operations. LSOs are naval aviators who observe landing aircraft to communicate with the pilots to help safely land the aircraft. Kitty Hawk is returning to the United States for decommissioning after 47 years of service. Kitty Hawk will be replaced later this summer by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73).
