JTF-SB protects U.S. territorial integrity by boosting awareness, accelerating response, and supporting federal law-enforcement partners. Operating under the direction of USNORTHCOM, the 1st Armored Division Headquarters exercises command and control over Joint Task Force–Southern Border, providing the core leadership and staff for the JTF-SB headquarters. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
