National Hispanic Heritage month is celebrated from Sep. 15 to Oct. 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions made by Hispanic Americans to the history, culture and achievements of the United States.

    Sgt. Cesar B. Ruiz was born Nov. 27, 1982 in Nava, Coahuila, Mexico. He was mortally wounded while supporting operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He was a mobilized Individual Ready Reserve Marine.

    Lance Cpl. Juan R. Rodriguez-Velasco was mortally wounded while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. He was assigned to the Marine Forces Reserve’s 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Corpus Christi, Texas.

    Col. Pierre Julien Ortiz received two Navy Crosses for extraordinary heroism as a Major in the Marine Corps Reserve in World War II.

    Lance Cpl. Luis J. Castillo was born in Nezahualcóyolt, Mexico on Feb. 22, 1986. He was a part of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division and was mortally wounded in combat while serving in the vicinity of Al Anbar Province, Iraq.

    Pfc. Harold Gonsalves became the only Hispanic Marine during World War II to be awarded the Medal of Honor for sacrificing his life by throwing himself on top of an enemy grenade in Okinawa.

    Pfc. Roberto Clemente served as an active duty infantryman at Camp Lejeune until 1959; he remained in the Marine Corps Reserve until Sept. of 1964.

    1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez led men into the Battle of Inchon, Sept. 15, 1950. Lopez jumped on a grenade to protect his Marines and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

    Retired Chief Warrant Officer 3 Rose Franco became the first Hispanic female Chief Warrant Officer in the Marine Corps.

    Brig. Gen. Angela Salinas made history in 2006 when she became the first Hispanic female to become a general office in the Marine Corps.

    Col. Jay R. Vargas received the Medal of Honor for actions during the Vietnam War in 1968.

    Lance Cpl. Carlos A. Aragon was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on June 20, 1990. He was mortally wounded in Afghanistan as a result of an improvised explosive device detonation.

    Sgt. Joseph M. Acabá served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for six years. In May of 2004, he became the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to be named a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut candidate when he was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Training Group 19.

    Cpl. Ramona M. Valdez is a Dominican-born United States Marine who passed away during the Iraq War. She was posthumously honored by the United States Marine Corps when the II MEF Communications Training Center was dedicated as the Valdez Training Facility.

    Retired Sgt. Maj. John L. Estrada, originally from the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, became the 15th Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps and the first person of Hispanic descent promoted to that rank on June 27, 2003.
